The topic of this semester's Robert and Marjorie Griffin Policy forum couldn't be more current.

"Now what? Managing the budget crisis while promoting a positive future for the state of Michigan," will be moderated by "Off the Record" correspondent Tim Skubick.

Panelists of the event will consist of Speaker of the House Andy Dillon, D-Redford Township, Majority Leader of the Senate Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, Minority Leader of the Senate Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek and Central Michigan University alum and Minority Leader of the House Craig DeRoche, R-Novi.

They will discuss failures and successes in Michigan government in the past year.

"It's very rare to have all four leaders under one roof speaking together," said Gary Peters, Griffin Endowed chair of American Government.

The forum will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

Questions posed to the panel will range from state budget issues and university funding to Michigan's ability to compete globally.

Burton senior Amanda Therrian plans to attend the forum.

"I know what they have done in the past, they bring in good people to speak, and it's difficult to attend - it gets very crowded," she said. "They're an interesting way to hear different opinions and it gives students a chance to speak."

The forum also is the same night as the Central/Western football game.

Viktoria Schmidt, Germany freshman, said she cares more about politics than football, but nevertheless will attend the game, which begins at 7 p.m. in Kalamazoo.

"I should go to the football game to identify with the school," she said.

Peters organized the event. He teaches a Michigan government course at CMU and is running for Congress.

The Griffin Endowed Chair is responsible for organizing two forums a year, one each semester.

Previous chairs were Bill Ballenger, editor of Inside Michigan Politics and Craig Ruff, a political consultant. Previous Griffin forums have touched on higher education funding and term limits, among other issues.
