Comic book artist designs Iron Man suits for summer movie

By Brad Canze

Adi Granov may not be a household name, but when "Iron Man" kicks off the superhero-heavy summer movie season next week, the 31-year-old artist's fingerprints will be all over the hero's helmet. Along with concept artists Phil Saunders and Ryan Meinerding, Granov designed the suits worn by Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.

Senior working to create comic book

By Brad Canze

Many of Steve Welsh's friends do not know him as a "comic book guy." They may know the Petoskey senior as a former mayoral candidate in his hometown. Or as the guy who had a live segment of G4's "Attack of the Show" filmed in his apartment. "(Welsh) is extremely intelligent, and rather worldly," said Petoskey junior Andrew Keck, WMHW's sports director and host of SportsZone on Thursday, a show that Welsh is a regular guest.

Palahniuk's novel so gross I kept reading

By Frank Wisswell

I never thought I would enjoy reading about porn. No offense, it's just not my thing. But I just could not put down Chuck Palahniuk's latest book, "Snuff." To say Palahniuk is famous for pushing the limits of common decency is an understatement. The guy writes the grossest stuff he can and gets away with it because his unique writing style can make the ugliest of things appear beautiful.

By Caitlin Foyt

Comic books have a long-standing bad reputation. There is this presumption that people who read "comics" are children and gamer-geeks who attend those four-day annual conventions. The feel-good bubblegum pop of groups like The Beach Boys might have dominated your parents' summer days, but where does that leave the modern rock connoisseur? Fear not, friends.

Good reads

By Frank Wisswell

Books are a great, cheap way to pass time and get some sun at the same time, whether it be on the beach or just on your front lawn. Here's my summer reading list of three books spanning genres and time periods. PLEASE NOTE: "Harry Potter" is not on this list.

Mystifying movies

By Brad Canze

The summer months are traditionally when all the huge-budget blockbuster popcorn flicks are released. Besides offering thrills and state-of-the-art special effects (and maybe a plot, if you're lucky), air-conditioned theaters are a great place to escape the summer heat and just unwind for a couple hours.

My uncle is my comic

By Lalita Chemello

My uncle loves comic books. Batman, Superman, Hulk, Iron Man and Spiderman - you name it, he knows it. Every visit to our home, he would have in possession various older movies of Superman and old-school sleuth shows to show me. He was so excited to tell me and my brothers about all of the new movies in production based from the comic.
